If you work with or have contact with children or vulnerable adults, you have a responsibility to check that all your contractors have been DBS checked to the right level before being allowed onsite. These decisions need to be based on activity, frequency and contact level.
Employers have a responsibility to ensure that any contractor, or any employee of the contractor, who is to work on their behalf at a school, college, nursery, children’s centre or any other establishment that looks after children or vulnerable adults, have been subject to the appropriate level of DBS check.
Like working with children, working with vulnerable adults in some situations requires a DBS check. This could include Care Homes, Health Care, Personal Care, Social Work, Household Affairs, Conveying. If you are likely to be working in one of these sectors, then it is worth getting further advice as to which level of DBS check is required based on the individual scenario.
How do you know if a DBS Check has been run previously?
If someone gives you their DBS Certificate number just ask to see the certificate itself. The number unfortunately, at present, does not allow you to check online and confirm if they have had one. The only way to see the result of someone’s DBS Check is by viewing the certificate itself.
