Is your organisation a great place to work and do people have a genuine desire to work for you? If you can genuinely answer yes to this question, then you are one of just a few, in a pool of many, who claim to be.
It works like a dream when both the employer and employee’s mindsets are well-matched so the recruitment, induction and development of staff is key to check compatibility. It’s not all about the salary!
Here are some points for consideration if you’re aspiring to become an employer of choice:
- Communicate your culture and values and ensure they are evident in the recruitment and employee experience. Candidates are attracted by a culture and values that they can align with.
- Provide career development and growth opportunities. There are plenty of creative ways to develop employees without spending a lot of money. Think about opportunities and schemes for mentoring, apprenticeships, shadowing, special projects, secondments or networking to enhance performance.
- What do you get? Where possible, review your offer of pay and benefits and think about what might appeal to candidates and employees. Employee assistance and wellbeing schemes offer little extras to employees that matter.
- Review your recruitment and retention practices. Providing feedback opportunities for both successful and unsuccessful candidates can be informative and useful in improving the recruitment experience. Track your turnover and monitor the performance of new recruits closely – offer a comprehensive induction and extended support to help them in their new role.
- Make sure there are opportunities for employees to contribute and get involved beyond their role with meaningful work.
Don’t forget, candidates are checking you out too so don’t forget to make sure your website, marketing collateral and social media truly reflects your organisation.
