Trying to stay compliant with the Health and Safety regulations required within education establishments can be overwhelming. FusionHR partners with Stallard Kane to provide high quality Health and Safety services to our customers. They offer a wide range of checks, surveys, and assessments to ensure your workplace setting is staying in check!
There can be a lot to think about regarding Health and Safety compliance and Stallard Kane has created a useful list of services, so you can consider which of them may be relevant to you and your workplace.
Health and Safety Checks you need to think about for your school, college, or Trust:
- Portable Appliance Testing – We use them every day but how safe are they? Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) tests electricals such as laptops, monitors, and tablets. These must meet regulations such as Provision and Use of Workplace Equipment Regulations 1998 and Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. Make sure you have a PAT testing procedure within your organisation, following timelines recommended. Stallard Kane can carry out PAT testing as part of their Compliance services.
- Fire Extinguishers – In line with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRO), Fire Extinguishers must be provided where there are any risks of fire. Your school’s allocated Fire Safety Officer must ensure they are serviced on an annual basis, to ensure they are in full working order in the event of an emergency. Stallard Kane offer training for your team on Fire Safety Awareness and the use of Fire Extinguishers.
- Fire Door Audit – These need to be inspected on a regular basis to ensure they are effective in the event of a fire. Stallard Kane will not only inspect door but also the integrity of it within your building.
- Fire Risk Assessment – These should be carried out in detail and reviewed regularly. If you are needing help with Fire Safety, you can use Stallard Kane’s Fire Risk Assessment to ensure you comply with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, as well as their Fire Alarm System Service and Emergency Lights Checks.
- Wiring – Wiring in buildings can often be forgotten about as it is hidden away and only rears its head when there is something wrong. Getting Fixed Wire Tests and Electrical Condition Reports can help give peace of mind that wiring and electrics in your buildings are safe and do not pose a Fire Risk. Stallard Kane states these are required at five-yearly intervals as a minimum, with other workplaces requiring it more often. Check when you last completed these checks.
- Asbestos Management – Stallard Kane state that if your premises, or the premises you work on, were built before the year 2000, its likely they may be some Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) within it. Duty holders have a legal obligation under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, and Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 (Regulation 4) to manage any asbestos within their premises. We can offer training on the awareness and safety around asbestos, as well as support with Asbestos Management. You may want to utilise Stallard Kane’s Asbestos Survey which will sample suspected materials and produce a full report of analysis results, stating the type, location, and risk level. Stallard Kane will highlight any actions that need to be taken.
If you are part of the education sector, HSE started increasing school inspections as of September 2022. Read our previous blog on HSE inspections here.
