The DFE have recently drafted an update for KCSIE 2023, meaning that further adjustments may be added before the final release. There are 3 additional paragraphs that have been added so far which you may want to make note of and think about the possible action you may need to take.
1 – Filtering and Monitoring – Increased expectations and responsibilities around the schools filtering and monitoring IT systems.
This paragraph includes the expectations of staff understanding the importance of online safety, appropriate filtering and monitoring on school devices and school networks. It states that the DSL should take lead responsibility on the above. The paragraph also mentions the need for schools to follow the recently published DfE publication of Filtering and monitoring standards and guidance.
2 – Retention of Documents
Further clarity on the retention of documents has been included in paragraph 276. To verify successful candidates’ identity, documents of right to work and required qualifications should be kept on their personnel file. The paragraph emphasises that schools do not have to keep copies of DBS certificates, in order to fulfil the duty of maintaining the single central record.
3 – Use of school sites by outside organisations
This paragraph confirms the schools safeguarding responsibilities for when allegations of an incident that has happened off-site are raised. It is important to note that with any safeguarding allegation, your school should follow the appropriate process and contact the LADO.
Minor changes such as terminology changes, children who are absent from education and the Equality Act have also been updated. Before the final release of KCSIE 2023, we may see further information has been included.
