What is menopause?
Menopause is a natural process of ageing that all women will experience in their lifetime. It is the time that marks the end of your menstrual cycle, when your ovaries stop producing eggs. The average age that a woman experiences menopause is usually between 45 and 55. You may begin to experience some menopause symptoms before the age of 45, this is known as early menopause.
What are the symptoms to look out for?
Common symptoms of menopause include a change to your period, changes in mood, hot flushes and night sweats, joint and muscle pain, urinary problems, and a loss of interest in sex.
Symptoms can last for months or even years and can change with time. For example, you may notice that your night sweats may improve but you may start to develop low moods.
It is important to note that menopause symptoms differ for everyone, some find that their symptoms are bearable, whereas others may experience extreme discomfort.
Are there any treatments available?
One of the treatments available, that many women choose to investigate, is Hormone Replacement therapy (HRT). HRT is a safe and effective treatment that involves using oestrogen to replace your body’s own levels around the time of the menopause. There are different types of HRT that can be provided for you, these include skin patches, a gel or spray to put onto the skin, implants, or tablets. For more information on HRT, you can contact your local GP.
Non-hormone medicines are an alternative to HRT if this does not appeal to you. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy may be offered, this can help low moods and anxiety. Blood pressure medicines and anti-depressants may also be offered.
