As part of the UK government’s ‘Levelling Up’ programme, they are focusing on improvements in education. By 2030, they expect the number of primary school children achieving the standard in reading, writing and maths to have significantly increased. In England, this will be 90% of children achieving the standard. Worst performing areas are expected to have increased this student achievement by over a third.
This white paper explains and sets out the government’s long-term plans for building a school system that will ensure every student has access to the right support in order to progress to their full potential. The white paper explains that this will be achieved by ensuring:
- Every child has an excellent teacher,
- There are high standards of curriculum, behaviour, and attendance,
- There is targeted support available for every child who requires it,
- A stronger and fairer school system.
The white paper sets out plans to prioritise growing ‘strong’ trusts. MATs have often shown great records of improving sponsored schools and often eventually helping the sponsored school to exceed comparators. The government believe that their plans to grow ‘strong’ trusts and extend their reach will build effective families of schools who share good practice, support schools to improve and provide opportunities for staff. The Department for Education survey data suggests that 58% of primary schools have improved curriculum resources since joining a MAT and 89% experienced improvements in collaboration.
This report relies on previous data that 82% of schools have felt an improved sense of direction and purpose since becoming part of a MAT.
