The School Teachers’ Review Body published their 32nd report back in July 2022 and concluded that “While pay is not the sole determinant of recruitment, retention and morale, it is an important influence on them, both for career starters and experienced teachers.” The Body stated that they felt it was necessary and appropriate to propose an exceeded general pay increase against the government’s proposal. Starting salaries were set to increase by 8.9% up to £28,000. The update also stated that all teachers will receive a 5%-8.9% increase in pay beginning in September 2022. As of the 4th of November 2022, this was officially put in place as the praying period came to an end. Due to this, pay for teachers’ will be backdated to September 2022.
It is hoped that these measures will help to address industry risks to teacher supply and balance affordability. The changes to the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions are stated below:
- From 1st September 2022, 5% increase to all pay/allowance ranges/advisory points including higher increases to some sections of the Main Pay Range, a move towards providing a minimum starting salary of £30,000 by September 2023.
- For September 2023, a 3% increase to all pay/allowance ranges/advisory points including higher increases to sections of the Main Pay Range providing a minimum starting salary of £30,000.
The government is hoping that this increase in starting salaries will aid talented candidates to be further attracted to a job in teaching and in turn raise the status of the profession.
It is also hoped that by focussing on teacher starting salaries in 2022 an improvement will be noted in the recruitment and retention of high calibre staff in the education sector.
