The School Teachers’ Review Body published their 32nd report this month and concluded that “While pay is not the sole determinant of recruitment, retention and morale, it is an important influence on them, both for career starters and experienced teachers.” The Body stated that they felt it was necessary and appropriate to propose an exceeded general pay increase against the government’s proposal. The increase in teacher salaries is set to start from September 2022, which will see starting salaries increase by 8.9% up to £28,000. The update states that all teachers will receive a 5%-8.9% increase in pay beginning in September 2022. Pay recommendations have been brought about from the independent School Teachers’ Review Body.
It is hoped that these measures address industry risks to teacher supply and also balance affordability. The School Teachers’ Review Body made recommendations which have summarised below:
- From September 2022, 5% increase to all pay/allowance ranges/advisory points including higher increases to some sections of the Main Pay Range, a move towards providing a minimum starting salary of £30,000 by September 2023.
- For September 2023, a 3% increase to all pay/allowance ranges/advisory points including higher increases to sections of the Main Pay Range providing a minimum starting salary of £30,000.
As stated, the government has wholly accepted the School Teachers’ Review Body’s recommendations. Outside London, teacher starting salaries will increase by 8.9% with the aim of being up to £28,000 in the 2022/2023 academic year. The update states that “…the Government is making good progress towards meeting its manifesto commitment for new teacher pay to rise to £30,000..”. The government hopes that this increase in starting salaries will aid talented candidates to be further attracted to a job in teaching and in turn raise the status of the profession.
Teachers who have been in their careers for more than 5 years will receive a 5% pay rise from September. This was increased, as the government have stated, from an original percentage of 3% due to recognition of the broader economic context and the School Teachers’ Review Body’s recommendations.
Education Secretary James Cleverly said:
“Teachers are the fabric of our school system and it is their dedication and skill that ensures young people can leave school with the knowledge and opportunities they need to get on in life.”
“We are delivering significant pay increases for all teachers despite the present economic challenges, pushing teacher starting salaries up towards the £30,000 milestone and giving experienced teachers the biggest pay rise in a generation. This will attract even more top-quality talent to inspire children and young people and reward teachers for their hard work.”
It is hoped that by focussing on teacher starting salaries in 2022 an improvement will be noted in the recruitment and retention of high calibre staff in the education sector.
