With the fast-paced nature of the employment landscape, it’s important for both employers and employees to stay up to date with the latest changes to employment laws, and that this be reflected in their policies and practices.
There are significant changes coming into effect on April 6th, 2024, that could impact millions of workers.
One of the most notable changes is the expansion of flexible working rights. Currently, employees who have worked for the same employer for at least 26 weeks have the right to request flexible working arrangements. However, as of April 6th, 2024, this right will be extended to all employees from day one of employment. This means that workers will have greater flexibility in how and when they work, allowing them to better balance their personal and professional lives.
In addition to flexible working rights, there will also be changes to carers leave. Currently, employees are entitled to take a reasonable amount of time off work to care for a dependent in an emergency. However, from April 6th, 2024, workers will be entitled to a minimum of five days of carers leave per year to care for a dependent, whether it’s a child, elderly relative, or someone with a disability. This change will provide much-needed support to individuals who juggle caring responsibilities alongside their jobs.
Furthermore, maternity/paternity benefits are also set to undergo significant changes. Currently, employees are entitled to up to 52 weeks of statutory maternity leave, with 39 weeks paid at a flat rate. Meanwhile, paternity leave is limited to two weeks of paid leave. However, from April 6th, 2024, there will be an increase in the amount of statutory maternity/paternity pay, as well as an extension of parental leave entitlements. This will give parents more flexibility in how they choose to divide their leave and allow for a more equal distribution of caring responsibilities between parents.
Overall, these changes to flexible working, carers leave, and maternity/paternity benefits represent a positive step towards creating a fairer and more inclusive workplace for all. Employers should ensure they are aware of these changes and update their policies accordingly to comply with the new laws. Likewise, employees should familiarise themselves with their rights to ensure they are able to take advantage of these new benefits.
By staying informed and proactive, both employers and employees can navigate these changes successfully and create a more supportive and accommodating work environment for all.
